Question 1 · 3rd grade math

What number goes in the blank? ___ - 5 = 9

Show the answer and why

Answer: B. 14

14 - 5 = 9, so the missing number is 14.

Why a child might pick a wrong answer:

  • A. 4 - subtracts again instead of adding back
  • C. 9 - writes the answer already shown
  • D. 5 - repeats the number being subtracted

Question 2 · 5th grade math

What number comes next in this pattern? 1, 2, 4, 8, ___

Show the answer and why

Answer: C. 16

Each number is double the one before, so next is 16.

Why a child might pick a wrong answer:

  • A. 4 - goes backwards instead of forwards
  • B. 13 - uses the wrong step size
  • D. 9 - just adds one

Question 3 · 4th grade reading

Rain drummed on the roof all morning. Instead of frowning, Grandpa handed Owen a pair of rubber boots. They spent an hour splashing through every puddle on the street and came home soaked and laughing.

What did Grandpa give Owen?

Show the answer and why

Answer: C. A pair of rubber boots

The passage says Grandpa handed Owen a pair of rubber boots.

How to use them

Let your child answer without help, then read the explanation together. The wrong answers are the useful part: if two in the same skill area went wrong for the same reason, that is the thing to practise. MAP Growth itself is adaptive, so the real test will go above and below grade level; a practice set at grade level is a warm-up, not a prediction.

From practice to a plan

Ten questions give a feel. The full Point of Progress test adapts like MAP Growth across math and reading & writing, reports every skill as strong or worth work and every wrong answer with the likely thinking behind it, and turns the gaps into a ten-week workbook. For what a score means, see what is a good MAP score.

Questions parents ask

Are these real MAP test questions?

No. NWEA does not share the questions in its tests. These are Point of Progress’s own questions in the same multiple-choice style.

Which grades are covered?

Grades 3 to 8, in math and in reading, ten questions each.

Will practising questions raise my child’s MAP score?

Knowing the format helps a child stay calm. What moves a RIT score is the skills underneath, so work on the area where the wrong answers cluster rather than repeating more questions.

Where does your child actually stand?

Point of Progress is an independent at-home adaptive test for grades 3 to 10. One purchase covers math and reading & writing, and the report comes the same day: the level, what the child can already do, and the specific skills to practise next. It is not an official assessment and no school accepts the result - it is for you.
