What it is worth

Tutoring is expensive. Guessing what to tutor is what makes it expensive.

Most families start paying for help before they know which topics are actually broken. The first few sessions go on finding out - at tutoring rates.

The comparison below uses the Report + workbook plan, because that is the one that does what a tutor does: work out where your child is, say what needs attention, and hand over material to practise on.

Private tutoring commonly runs somewhere between 30 and 60 an hour, depending on where you live and the subject. Take 40 as a middle figure, and put in your own if it is different.

A cautious year of tutoring · 10 hours 400
A typical year · 20 hours 800
Weekly through the school year · 40 hours 1,600
One hour · a single session 40
A full school year with us · 4 tests, 4 workbooks 19.96

Each workbook is ten chapters, about one a week, and a school year runs roughly forty weeks - so four of them fill the year. For less than the price of a single tutoring hour, you get a full year of finding out where your child is strong, where they are struggling, and what to practise next. That is at the current maths-only price; it rises when reading and writing arrive.

This is not an argument against tutors

A good tutor is worth paying for. The argument is about knowing what to point them at. Walk in with a report that says fractions and data handling, not "maths", and the hours you buy go on the thing that is actually wrong.

If the answer turns out to be that your child needs no tutoring at all, that is worth knowing too.
