Placement guide, math

Which level of Saxon Math should my child start?

How Saxon Math levels line up with school grades, how its placement test works, what to do if your child lands between two levels, and the mistakes parents most often make.

The short answer. The fraction-style names point to a grade but not the one most parents assume: the publisher says 5/4 is the fourth-grade book, 6/5 fifth, 7/6 sixth, 8/7 seventh and Algebra 1/2 eighth, so the number after the slash is the usual grade. The publisher also calls these skill-level books, not grade-level books, so a child can sit in a book that does not match the grade.

Use the publisher's own placement tool to choose the level (free, PDF). If you are not sure where your child really is, or the result surprises you, check the level first: it is quicker than a wrong book.

Saxon Math levels and the grades they usually suit

LevelUsually suits gradeMain topics
Saxon Math 33Primary program: addition and subtraction, multiplication and division facts, early fractions, time, money, graphing
Saxon Math 5/44Whole-number operations, multiplication and division facts, early fractions and decimals, measurement
Saxon Math 6/55Multi-digit operations, fractions and mixed numbers, decimals, basic geometry and word problems
Saxon Math 7/66Fractions and decimals, integers, exponents, prime factorization, coordinate graphing, word problems
Saxon Math 8/77Pre-algebra: integers, exponents, equations, ratio and proportion, geometry
Saxon Algebra 1/28Full pre-algebra plus geometry (area, surface area, volume) and some discrete math
Saxon Algebra 19First-year algebra; the 3rd edition also integrates some geometry, the 4th edition largely does not
Saxon GeometryNot given by the publisherStand-alone geometry course used with the 4th editions of Algebra 1 and Algebra 2
Saxon Algebra 210Second-year algebra; the 3rd edition continues integrated geometry
Saxon Advanced Mathematics11Geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus; reached in grade 10 only by accelerated students

Grades are the publisher's own guide. Many children sit a level above or below, especially after switching programs.

How Saxon Math placement works

  • Pick the test band: K-3 Placement Inventory (read aloud, one child at a time), Middle Grades test (Math 5/4 to Algebra 1/2), Upper Grades test (Algebra 1 to Calculus), or the separate Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 tests.
  • No calculator; the child works until stuck.
  • Middle Grades scoring is 20 questions per book: 16 or more correct on two consecutive sections points to the next book (for example 16+ on questions 21-40 and 41-60 means Math 8/7).
  • Upper Grades: 8-10 of 10 means ready, 5-7 needs a closer look, under 5 means not ready; the placement guide calls a score above 85 percent the most accurate signal.

If your child lands between two levels

The publisher says a child who has missed concepts in earlier study may do better one book lower, and that age, previous curriculum and how fast the child picks up new ideas should weigh in alongside the score. A 5-7 score on an Upper Grades part means checking prior course results before deciding. Resellers add that a child who finishes 8/7 with test scores of 80 percent or more can go straight to Algebra 1 and skip Algebra 1/2.

Problems parents often run into

  • Parents read 5/4 as a fifth-grade book and buy a level too high, or think a fourth grader in 5/4 is behind.
  • Children coming from other programs often land one book below their grade, which the publisher itself expects when earlier concepts were missed.
  • Lessons feel long; parents often report close to an hour, trim the problem sets, and treat very slow lessons as a sign of misplacement.
  • Families are unsure whether to do 8/7, Algebra 1/2 or both; advice differs by edition and by how strong the 8/7 scores are.
  • In high school, mixing 3rd and 4th editions causes gaps or repeated geometry because only the 4th-edition path has a separate Geometry book.

Switching to Saxon Math from another program

  • The placement tests are only valid for students new to Saxon; current Saxon students move on by finishing the previous book.
  • Students who took a stand-alone geometry course elsewhere should check which Saxon Algebra edition they are buying, since the 3rd edition spreads geometry through Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Advanced Math and has no separate geometry book.
  • Some parents report that any change of program tends to cost a few months of progress while the child adjusts to the incremental format.

When you don't need a whole level

A placement test answers one question: which book. If your child is mostly on track but shaky in one area, say fractions or paragraph writing, a full lower level means months of review they do not need. Practising just the gaps is faster, and keeps them in the book that fits the rest of their skills.

Questions parents ask

Is it bad if my child places below their grade?

No. Programs pace topics differently, so a lower level often reflects the order things were taught, not how able a child is. What matters is starting where the work makes sense.

Do I need a placement test at all?

If you are switching programs or your child has had a hard year, yes. Starting too high is the most common reason a new curriculum stalls in the first month.
