Which level of Math-U-See should my child start?
How Math-U-See levels line up with school grades, how its placement test works, what to do if your child lands between two levels, and the mistakes parents most often make.
The short answer. The levels use Greek letters, not grades, on purpose: the publisher calls the program skills-based and wants students placed by mastery. Each level centers on one operation (Gamma multiplication, Delta division, Epsilon fractions, Zeta decimals), so a school fourth or fifth grader can place in Gamma or Delta. Any grade equivalent a parent sees comes from resellers, not the publisher.
Use the publisher's own placement tool to choose the level (free, both). If you are not sure where your child really is, or the result surprises you, check the level first: it is quicker than a wrong book.
Math-U-See levels and the grades they usually suit
| Level | Usually suits grade | Main topics |
|---|---|---|
| Math-U-See Beta | Not given by the publisher | Multi-digit addition and subtraction, place value, regrouping, rounding and estimation |
| Math-U-See Gamma | Not given by the publisher | Single- and multi-digit multiplication |
| Math-U-See Delta | Not given by the publisher | Single- and multi-digit division, plus area of basic shapes |
| Math-U-See Epsilon | Not given by the publisher | Fractions: equivalent fractions, common denominators and all four operations |
| Math-U-See Zeta | Not given by the publisher | Decimals, percents, exponents and the metric system |
| Math-U-See Pre-Algebra | Not given by the publisher | Negative numbers, order of operations, solving for the unknown |
| Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics (also sold as Algebra 1 Legacy) | Not given by the publisher | Linear equations and functions, systems, polynomials, quadratics, exponentials and radicals |
| Math-U-See Geometry | Not given by the publisher | Lines, angles, area, volume, Pythagorean theorem, congruence and similarity, proofs, intro to trig |
| Algebra 2: Principles of Secondary Mathematics | Not given by the publisher | Factoring polynomials, quadratic formula, conic sections and further algebra |
Grades are the publisher's own guide. Many children sit a level above or below, especially after switching programs.
How Math-U-See placement works
- For home use, an online questionnaire asks yes/no questions on mastered concepts and gives sample problems when unsure, then recommends a level.
- Printable tests are also posted: a pretest stops at the first row where the child misses two or more problems, then the test for that level follows.
- On a level test, 0-79 percent means start that level, 80-89 percent means start the next one, and 90 percent or more means take the next level's test.

If your child lands between two levels
The publisher offers free help from placement specialists by phone or chat when results are unclear. Parents commonly start one level back as review, skim the lessons the child already knows, and sometimes finish two levels in one year.
Problems parents often run into
- Parents look for a grade-to-level chart and find only conflicting reseller versions.
- Older children switching in often place in Gamma or Delta despite good grades, because a gap in one operation holds back the whole level.
- Families who leave after Zeta sometimes find gaps in geometry, measurement and word problems compared with other programs.
- Some parents switch away mid-level because they want more built-in review than a one-topic-per-level mastery design gives.
- Two Algebra 1 versions (Principles of Secondary Mathematics and Legacy) cause confusion over which one follows Pre-Algebra.

Ready to see where your child stands?
See where they stand →Switching to Math-U-See from another program
- A new family does not need to start at Primer; the placement tool decides the entry level.
- A separate readiness check exists for Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics, with bridge material for students who are not quite ready.
- When moving out of Math-U-See, other publishers suggest testing for gaps in measuring, money, clock, geometry and problem solving before choosing a level.
When you don't need a whole level
A placement test answers one question: which book. If your child is mostly on track but shaky in one area, say fractions or paragraph writing, a full lower level means months of review they do not need. Practising just the gaps is faster, and keeps them in the book that fits the rest of their skills.
Questions parents ask
How long is a Math-U-See lesson?
Usually one lesson per week; 10-35 minutes a day in Primer to Zeta and up to 45 minutes a day in Pre-Algebra to Calculus
Is it bad if my child places below their grade?
No. Programs pace topics differently, so a lower level often reflects the order things were taught, not how able a child is. What matters is starting where the work makes sense.
Do I need a placement test at all?
If you are switching programs or your child has had a hard year, yes. Starting too high is the most common reason a new curriculum stalls in the first month.
