Placement guide, math
Which level of The Good and the Beautiful Math should my child start?
How The Good and the Beautiful Math levels line up with school grades, how its placement test works, what to do if your child lands between two levels, and the mistakes parents most often make.
The short answer. Level numbers do match grades: the publisher says the courses sit on average grade level and are not an advanced curriculum. The trap is in the tests: the placement test labelled for a level checks readiness for that level, so it covers the previous level's skills (the Math 4 test checks Math 3 content). Math K-3 are parent-taught; from Math 4 the child works mostly alone from videos. Pre-Algebra is the same course as Math 8, and nothing is offered above it.
Use the publisher's own placement tool to choose the level (free, PDF). If you are not sure where your child really is, or the result surprises you, check the level first: it is quicker than a wrong book.
The Good and the Beautiful Math levels and the grades they usually suit
| Level | Usually suits grade | Main topics |
|---|---|---|
| Math 2 | 2 | Addition and subtraction with regrouping, intro to multiplication, division and fractions, time, money, measurement, graphs |
| Math 3 | 3 | Multiplication and division, place value to millions, perimeter and area, fractions, rounding, elapsed time |
| Math 4 | 4 | Four operations with larger numbers, long division, factors and multiples, fractions and decimals, angles, data and probability |
| Math 5 | 5 | Operations with fractions, decimals and percents, geometry, exponents, square roots, negative numbers, beginning equations |
| Math 6 | 6 | Decimal operations, ratios and proportions, unit rates, statistics, graphing lines, scientific notation |
| Math 7 | 7 | Exponents, solving equations, ratios, percents, graphing linear equations, angle relationships, volume, functions |
| Pre-Algebra | Math 8 | 8 | Factorization, scientific notation, roots, linear equations, functions, polynomials, systems, area, surface area and volume |
Grades are the publisher's own guide. Many children sit a level above or below, especially after switching programs.
How The Good and the Beautiful Math placement works
- One free PDF holds a test for each level from K to Pre-Algebra; pick the level you expect and give that test.
- Up to Math 6 the parent reads the blue instructions, gives any oral parts and ticks each correct answer; Math 7 and Pre-Algebra are done by the student alone, with a calculator only where marked.
- Cut-off is about 80 percent: 48 of 60 for Math 2-6, 46 of 58 for Math 7, 38 of 48 for Pre-Algebra; below that, review the missed concepts before starting.

If your child lands between two levels
Below the cut-off, review the gaps first; each course also reviews the tested concepts. The level FAQs say not to skip whole levels, because it leaves holes: if the child moves fast but is still learning new material, do more than one lesson a day; if the child already knows the material, use the unit assessments to skip units or move up. A child who has finished Pre-Algebra can take the linked Algebra Readiness Test.
Problems parents often run into
- Math K-3 need a parent to teach every lesson and a physical math box, which is a bigger time load than many expect.
- The jump at Math 4 to mostly independent video work catches some children out, and skipping the videos means missing content.
- Daily time climbs steeply in the upper levels, to about an hour a lesson by Math 7.
- Families who want acceleration or heavy drill find it light, and a reviewer warns that some children need to work below their age grade.
- There is no Algebra 1, Geometry or Algebra 2 yet, so high school math needs a different publisher.

See where they stand →Switching to The Good and the Beautiful Math from another program
- From the discontinued original The Good and the Beautiful Math: move to the next Simply Good and Beautiful level (finished Math 1, start Math 2); the publisher says the transition is easy.
- From other programs: give the K-8 placement test; the first lessons of each course review the previous level.
- The publisher says students are ready for Pre-Algebra after finishing Math 7.
When you don't need a whole level
A placement test answers one question: which book. If your child is mostly on track but shaky in one area, say fractions or paragraph writing, a full lower level means months of review they do not need. Practising just the gaps is faster, and keeps them in the book that fits the rest of their skills.
Questions parents ask
How long is a The Good and the Beautiful Math lesson?
Math 2: 20-25; Math 3: 30-35; Math 4: 35-45; Math 5: 35-45; Math 6: 45-60; Math 7: 50-60; Pre-Algebra: not stated (video portion 12-15)
Is it bad if my child places below their grade?
No. Programs pace topics differently, so a lower level often reflects the order things were taught, not how able a child is. What matters is starting where the work makes sense.
Do I need a placement test at all?
If you are switching programs or your child has had a hard year, yes. Starting too high is the most common reason a new curriculum stalls in the first month.
