Placement guide, language arts
Which level of Moving Beyond the Page should my child start?
How Moving Beyond the Page levels line up with school grades, how its placement test works, what to do if your child lands between two levels, and the mistakes parents most often make.
The short answer. Levels are age ranges, and the middle age is the on-grade age: the publisher says an on-grade 8-year-old (3rd grade) uses Age 7-9, not Age 8-10. The lowest age in each label is meant for gifted children, because the program is written for learners one or two grades ahead. Picking the level whose first number matches the child's age therefore usually puts an average child a year too high.
Use the publisher's own placement tool to choose the level (free, download (free account required)). If you are not sure where your child really is, or the result surprises you, check the level first: it is quicker than a wrong book.
Moving Beyond the Page levels and the grades they usually suit
| Level | Usually suits grade | Main topics |
|---|---|---|
| Age 6-8 | 2 | Comprehensive level combining language arts, science and social studies, with chapter books read aloud and reading practice at the child's level |
| Age 7-9 | 3 | First level with novel-based language arts sold separately from science and social studies: three-week literature units, paragraphs, descriptive language, grammar. Needs 3rd or early 4th grade reading and 3-4 sentences on a topic |
| Age 8-10 | 4 | Novels averaging about 5th grade reading level, multi-paragraph writing with revision. Needs 4th or 5th grade reading and an organized paragraph |
| Age 9-11 | 5 | Novels at a late 5th or 6th grade reading level, writing that includes five-paragraph essays. Needs multiple paragraphs on a topic |
| Age 10-12 | 6 | Novels at a late 6th or 7th grade reading level, multi-paragraph and essay writing. Needs familiarity with the five-paragraph essay |
| Age 11-13 | 7 | Novels at a late 7th or 8th grade reading level, essays and literary analysis. Needs familiarity with the five-paragraph essay |
| Age 12-14 | 8 | Novels at an 8th or 9th grade reading level. Needs to be able to write a five-paragraph essay |
| High School 1 (HS1) | 9-10 | High school level reading, poetry and short story conventions, figurative language, creative writing. Needs five-paragraph essay experience |
Grades are the publisher's own guide. Many children sit a level above or below, especially after switching programs.
How Moving Beyond the Page placement works
- The publisher gives three steps.
- First, start in the middle of an age range (a 9-year-old starts Age 8-10, a 7-year-old Age 6-8).
- Second, check reading and writing against the language arts requirements listed for each level, and go with the lower of the two, because when a child reads above grade level, writing usually decides the fit.
- Third, if still unsure, use the placement assessment for that level, which takes 30-45 minutes and comes with rubrics and guides for judging the result.
- The assessments download after signing in with a free account.
- Separate reading and math placement questionnaires are offered as PDFs.

If your child lands between two levels
Take the lower level when reading and writing disagree. From Age 7-9 on, language arts can be bought separately from science and social studies, so a child can do a lower language arts level and a higher science level, though the cross-subject links are lost. For a child at the bottom of an age range whose level looks easy, the publisher suggests trying one unit first, then compacting (two lessons a day, skipping mastered work) rather than jumping up. Older children can pick literature units that interest them and match their reading level.
Problems parents often run into
- Strong readers who are weaker writers get placed by reading level. The publisher says writing usually determines the fit and that the writing instruction is rigorous.
- The literature is chosen for advanced learners and reads high for the stated ages, so some books can frustrate an average reader at that level.
- Reviewers note that younger levels need a lot of parent interaction, that hands-on lessons need materials gathered, and that many separate novels are required.

- The publisher says most families use the same level for language arts, science and social studies, but language arts can be split off from Age 7-9 on.
- Coming in at middle school, check the five-paragraph essay requirement first: Age 10-12 and above assume it.
- For older children who need lower-level reading and writing, the publisher suggests Age 7-9 language arts with Age 8-10 science and social studies for 9- or 10-year-olds.
When you don't need a whole level
A placement test answers one question: which book. If your child is mostly on track but shaky in one area, say fractions or paragraph writing, a full lower level means months of review they do not need. Practising just the gaps is faster, and keeps them in the book that fits the rest of their skills.
Questions parents ask
How long is a Moving Beyond the Page lesson?
About 1 hour of language arts a day at Age 7-9 through 10-12, plus 20-30 minutes of independent reading. 75-90 minutes per subject at Age 11-13 and 12-14
Is it bad if my child places below their grade?
No. Programs pace topics differently, so a lower level often reflects the order things were taught, not how able a child is. What matters is starting where the work makes sense.
Do I need a placement test at all?
If you are switching programs or your child has had a hard year, yes. Starting too high is the most common reason a new curriculum stalls in the first month.
