Which level of Memoria Press Literature and Composition should my child start?
How Memoria Press Literature and Composition levels line up with school grades, how to choose a level without a placement test, what to do if your child lands between two levels, and the mistakes parents most often make.
The short answer. Literature sets are named by grade, but composition stages are not: every new student starts at Stage I (Fable) or, from 9th grade, at Stage II (Narrative), whatever their grade. A 7th grader new to Memoria Press does Fable and Narrative in year 1, not the 7th grade stage (Refutation & Confirmation). The literature guides are also written to make students read slightly above their comfort level, so the grade on a set is a stretch, not a floor.
Memoria Press Literature and Composition has no formal placement test, so the level comes from the publisher's guidance below. If you are not sure where your child really is, check their level first: it is quicker than a wrong book.

Grades are the publisher's own guide. Many children sit a level above or below, especially after switching programs.
How to choose a Memoria Press Literature and Composition level
- No placement test for literature or composition was found.
- For composition, the publisher's page gives a start sequence by the grade the student begins in: from 4th grade, one stage a year starting with Fable.
- From 5th to 8th grade, Fable and Narrative in year 1 (one per semester), then one stage a year.
- From 9th to 10th grade, Narrative and Chreia & Maxim in year 1.
- From 11th to 12th grade, four stages over two years ending with Common Topic.
- The only stated entry requirement is that a student can write a basic paragraph.
- Literature sets are chosen by grade, with each individual novel set also carrying its own grade band (for example Farmer Boy grades 3-4, Treasure Island grades 7+).
If your child lands between two levels
The publisher says it is difficult for older students to move through several composition stages a year and recommends that late starters reach at least Stages IV and V. For literature, it gives no rule for choosing between grades.
Problems parents often run into
- Parents report the literature guides have many questions per lesson and can feel dry, and many families trim the questions or let the child answer some orally.
- Reviewers note the guides require quite a bit of writing, which is a heavy load for younger students.
- The literature sets for several grades do not include the novels, which must be bought or borrowed separately.

Ready to see where your child stands?
See where they stand →Switching to Memoria Press Literature and Composition from another program
- Coming from another writing program, start Classical Composition at Fable (or at Narrative from 9th grade), not at the stage that matches the grade.
- Students who cannot yet write a basic paragraph should do Introduction to Composition (grades 3-4) or equivalent work first.
- For literature, check the grade band on each novel set, since a set's books can span more than one grade.
When you don't need a whole level
A placement test answers one question: which book. If your child is mostly on track but shaky in one area, say fractions or paragraph writing, a full lower level means months of review they do not need. Practising just the gaps is faster, and keeps them in the book that fits the rest of their skills.
Questions parents ask
Is it bad if my child places below their grade?
No. Programs pace topics differently, so a lower level often reflects the order things were taught, not how able a child is. What matters is starting where the work makes sense.
Do I need a placement test at all?
If you are switching programs or your child has had a hard year, yes. Starting too high is the most common reason a new curriculum stalls in the first month.
