Which level of Logic of English should my child start?

How Logic of English levels line up with school grades, how its placement test works, what to do if your child lands between two levels, and the mistakes parents most often make.

The short answer. In Essentials, Level A, B and C are not grades or separate books. They are three spelling and vocabulary tracks (beginning, intermediate, advanced) printed inside every unit, and every student starts at Unit 1 whatever the level. Foundations A to D are a different program for ages 4-7, so 'Level C' means something different in each.

Use the publisher's own placement tool to choose the level (free, PDF). If you are not sure where your child really is, or the result surprises you, check the level first: it is quicker than a wrong book.

Logic of English levels and the grades they usually suit

LevelUsually suits gradeMain topics
Foundations A to DNot given by the publisherComplete language arts for ages 4-7: phonics, reading, handwriting, spelling. Each level has 40 lessons plus 8 review lessons. Level D focuses on fluency and comprehension. Listed for context, since grades 3-10 belong in Essentials.
Essentials Pre-LessonsNot given by the publisherOptional lessons packaged with Units 1-7: phonemic awareness, sounds of a-z, writing lowercase a-z (10-day handwriting plan). Used when the placement test shows gaps.
Essentials Units 1-7Not given by the publisherFirst of four volumes. Every Essentials student starts here, ages 8 to adult. Each unit has five Parts and three spelling tracks (Level A, B, C).
Essentials Units 8-15Not given by the publisherSecond volume, continuing phonograms, spelling rules, grammar and vocabulary at the chosen level.
Essentials Units 16-22Not given by the publisherThird volume.
Essentials Units 23-30Not given by the publisherFourth volume. Across all 30 units: 75 basic and 46 advanced phonograms, 31 spelling rules, parts of speech, comma rules, sentence types, verb tenses, and several hundred roots, prefixes and suffixes.

Grades are the publisher's own guide. Many children sit a level above or below, especially after switching programs.

How Logic of English placement works

  • A free four-page PDF from the Essentials Teacher's Guide, given one to one.
  • Part 1 decides Pre-Lessons or Unit 1: blending and segmenting eight words each, reading the sounds of a-z from flash cards, a handwriting check, and writing a-z from their sounds.
  • Struggling on words 1-6 of either phonemic awareness list, knowing fewer than 20 a-z sounds, or writing fewer than 20 correctly means do Pre-Lessons A-J first.
  • Part 2 picks the spelling track: the child reads grade-level text aloud for three minutes (words per minute), reads 20 words, then spells up to 20 dictated words, stopping after more than two misses.
  • Fewer than five reading words correct means Level A.
  • Otherwise the child starts in the track printed above the spelling words where they stopped (words 1-10 A, 11-15 B, 16-20 C), and 16 or more correct means Level C.

If your child lands between two levels

The publisher says a child reading under 75 words per minute, not confident, or unable to summarize should read only the Essentials Reader until reading independently or until Unit 20. A struggling student can drop to an easier track without going back to the beginning. The publisher does not recommend moving up mid-course to Level C. Struggling readers or spellers should choose Level A. Students who finish Essentials once can repeat it at Level B or C.

Problems parents often run into

  • Parents report that lessons are long, with one Part filling 45-60 minutes, and many split each Part over two or more days.
  • The teacher's guides are large and the program is teacher-led, with flashcards, tiles and games, so it needs a parent present.
  • Some parents report the daily phonogram drill is the part children find most tedious.
  • Families coming from Foundations are unsure where to start. The publisher says all start at Unit 1 and Part 1 of early units will mostly be review.

Switching to Logic of English from another program

  • The publisher recommends Essentials for ages 8 to adult, including struggling readers, strong readers who struggle with spelling, and proficient readers who want to understand spelling. Ages 7-8 can use either program.
  • Foundations is not a prerequisite. Many students coming from Foundations use Level B, some start with Level A, and the publisher suggests moving quickly through familiar lessons.
  • Coming from Foundations, the publisher suggests skipping the grammar in Part 3 on the first pass and adding it on a second pass at a harder spelling level.
  • Handwriting is not included in Essentials. The publisher sells it separately as Rhythm of Handwriting and schedules it in the Pre-Lessons.

When you don't need a whole level

A placement test answers one question: which book. If your child is mostly on track but shaky in one area, say fractions or paragraph writing, a full lower level means months of review they do not need. Practising just the gaps is faster, and keeps them in the book that fits the rest of their skills.

Questions parents ask

How long is a Logic of English lesson?

45-60 minutes per Part at a brisk pace, or 30-40 minutes a day with each Part split over two days

Is it bad if my child places below their grade?

No. Programs pace topics differently, so a lower level often reflects the order things were taught, not how able a child is. What matters is starting where the work makes sense.

Do I need a placement test at all?

If you are switching programs or your child has had a hard year, yes. Starting too high is the most common reason a new curriculum stalls in the first month.
