Which level of Math Lessons for a Living Education should my child start?
How Math Lessons for a Living Education levels line up with school grades, how its placement test works, what to do if your child lands between two levels, and the mistakes parents most often make.
The short answer. Levels are numbered like grades, but resellers quote the publisher saying they are 'loosely based on grades but are skill-based', and the pace is gentle. Parents report the early levels sit a little below their grade label and the program catches up around Level 3. Principles of Mathematics Book 1 is meant for grade 6 or 7 even though the publisher calls the course grades 7 to 8.
Use the publisher's own placement tool to choose the level (free, PDF). If you are not sure where your child really is, or the result surprises you, check the level first: it is quicker than a wrong book.
Math Lessons for a Living Education levels and the grades they usually suit
| Level | Usually suits grade | Main topics |

| Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 3 | 3 | Addition and subtraction to 4 digits, rounding, multiplication and division to 10s, area of rectangles and squares, place value through millions, measurement, solving for unknowns, Roman numerals |
| Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 4 | 4 | Larger numbers, new fraction concepts and equivalent fractions, metric measurement, decimals, basic geometry, averaging |
| Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 5 | Not given by the publisher | Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000, 2-digit divisors, fraction operations, factoring, common multiples and denominators, decimals |
| Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 6 | 6 | Decimals, percentages, fractions and factors, averaging and rounding, basic geometry, maps, graphs and charts |
| Principles of Mathematics Book 1 | 6 or 7 | Adjacent upper level. First half of a two-book junior high course: arithmetic and geometry concepts, problem solving and pre-algebra, with a fast-paced review of basic arithmetic |
| Principles of Mathematics Book 2 | 7 or 8 | Adjacent upper level. Second half of the two-book junior high course that leads into high school algebra |
Grades are the publisher's own guide. Many children sit a level above or below, especially after switching programs.
How Math Lessons for a Living Education placement works
- One PDF holds tests for Levels 1 to 6.
- Each test lists the prerequisite skills for starting that level, so passing the Level 4 test means the child is ready to begin Level 4.
- Level 1 is a checklist.
- From Level 2 up, the child should make no more than 1 or 2 mistakes in each section, as marked at the start of each section.
- As the child works, the parent asks them to show or tell how and why each step works.
- The publisher says knowing the why matters as much as the right answer.

If your child lands between two levels
The publisher gives examples. A child who passes the Level 3 test easily but struggles on Level 4 begins Level 3. A child who passes the Level 5 test but cannot explain how the concepts work begins Level 4 to fill gaps. A child who passes the Level 4 test with one or two shaky topics can either work through Level 3 at a faster pace, which the publisher recommends, or start Level 4 and fill the gaps along the way.
Problems parents often run into
- Parents report that the early levels move slowly, and strong math students sometimes find them too easy.
- Parents advise having the child take the placement test for their current grade and the one above, because the levels are skill-based.
- Parents report that children who do not enjoy the story format lose interest, since each lesson opens with a story.

- Cathy Duffy's review says children entering mid-series are brought up to date in the text, and suggests using the previous level's workbook as a refresher before starting a new level.
- Cathy Duffy's review notes that the series does not follow Common Core and that its scope and sequence resembles what was common about ten years earlier, so a child coming from a school program may find some topics in a different grade.
- After Level 6 comes Principles of Mathematics Book 1. The publisher's teacher guide says students need basic arithmetic knowledge, and that a motivated older student can finish the course at an accelerated pace.
When you don't need a whole level
A placement test answers one question: which book. If your child is mostly on track but shaky in one area, say fractions or paragraph writing, a full lower level means months of review they do not need. Practising just the gaps is faster, and keeps them in the book that fits the rest of their skills.
Questions parents ask
How long is a Math Lessons for a Living Education lesson?
About 30 minutes a lesson, five days a week, for 36 weeks (publisher Level 3 sample). Principles of Mathematics: about 30 to 45 minutes a lesson, four to five days a week (publisher teacher guide).
Is it bad if my child places below their grade?
No. Programs pace topics differently, so a lower level often reflects the order things were taught, not how able a child is. What matters is starting where the work makes sense.
Do I need a placement test at all?
If you are switching programs or your child has had a hard year, yes. Starting too high is the most common reason a new curriculum stalls in the first month.
