Which level of IXL should my child start?

How IXL levels line up with school grades, how its placement test works, what to do if your child lands between two levels, and the mistakes parents most often make.

The short answer. Diagnostic levels look like test scores but are grade levels: 500 means ready to start 5th-grade skills and 550 means about halfway through 5th grade. A level shown as a range is not finished, only a star means the level is pinpointed. IXL renamed the tool in March 2025, so 'Real-Time Diagnostic' and 'Flex Diagnostic in Real-Time mode' are the same thing.

Use the publisher's own placement tool to choose the level (online). If you are not sure where your child really is, or the result surprises you, check the level first: it is quicker than a wrong book.

Grades are the publisher's own guide. Many children sit a level above or below, especially after switching programs.

How IXL placement works

  • The Diagnostic is an adaptive set of questions in the Assessment tab ('Step into the arena') for math and language arts.
  • IXL says it takes about 45 minutes to an hour per subject and its parent guide suggests two 20 to 25 minute sessions.
  • The child picks one of two questions each time and can say 'Haven't learned this yet' to skip.
  • There is no fixed number of questions.
  • Levels map to grades (400 means ready for 4th-grade skills) and are shown overall and for each strand.
  • When levels are pinpointed, IXL builds a personalized action plan of recommended skills.
  • IXL tells parents not to help with any question, and says only advanced high school students who normally use a calculator should use one.

If your child lands between two levels

Keep levels current by answering about 10 to 15 Diagnostic questions a week. IXL's parent guide says to pick one action-plan skill a day and work to a SmartScore of 80, which IXL treats as proficiency. Its family guide says to aim for proficiency in at least two skills a week.

Problems parents often run into

  • IXL warns that scores are only accurate if the child answers every Diagnostic question alone. A parent who helps raises the level and the recommendations.
  • Levels go stale if the child stops answering Diagnostic questions, because they only update as the child keeps answering. IXL asks for 10 to 15 questions a week.
  • Parents read a range, such as 450 to 550, as a result. IXL says a range means more questions are needed before the level is pinpointed.

Switching to IXL from another program

  • Grade names on IXL are skill lists, so a child can work in any grade's skills. The Diagnostic recommendations are the intended way to pick skills across grades.
  • IXL also offers Integrated 1 to 3 skill plans for families using an integrated high school sequence.

When you don't need a whole level

A placement test answers one question: which book. If your child is mostly on track but shaky in one area, say fractions or paragraph writing, a full lower level means months of review they do not need. Practising just the gaps is faster, and keeps them in the book that fits the rest of their skills.

Questions parents ask

Is it bad if my child places below their grade?

No. Programs pace topics differently, so a lower level often reflects the order things were taught, not how able a child is. What matters is starting where the work makes sense.

Do I need a placement test at all?

If you are switching programs or your child has had a hard year, yes. Starting too high is the most common reason a new curriculum stalls in the first month.
