Math-U-See vs Singapore Math (Dimensions Math): which one suits your child?
Math-U-See teaches one main operation per level with blocks and short videos until it is mastered, while Singapore Math follows a grade-by-grade sequence that mixes topics and leans on mental math and multi-step word problems.
The short answer. Neither is better for every child. Choose Math-U-See if your child needs to see and touch the math before it clicks. Choose Singapore Math (Dimensions Math) if your child likes puzzles and solving problems more than one way. Whichever you pick, the level matters more than the brand, so find out where your child is before you buy.

How they differ
| Math-U-See | Singapore Math (Dimensions Math) | |
|---|---|---|
| How a lesson runs | Parent and child watch a short video, the parent demonstrates with blocks (build, write, say), then the child does practice pages until mastered, usually one lesson a week. | Parent leads a discussion of an opening problem, the textbook shows solutions, then the child practices in the workbook, roughly one lesson a day. |
| How new topics are introduced | Each level centers on one operation (Gamma multiplication, Delta division, Epsilon fractions, Zeta decimals); levels use Greek letters, not grades. | Each grade (A and B books) covers several strands, such as numbers, measurement, geometry and data, in a set order matching US grades. |
| Review (spiral or mastery) | Mastery: three practice pages, then review pages that revisit earlier lessons, plus a test per lesson; move on only when mastered. | Mastery by chapter, with earlier topics mixed into workbook practice and optional chapter and cumulative tests. |
| Visuals or manipulatives | One block set used from Primer through Pre-Algebra, with fraction overlays and algebra inserts later; digital blocks available. | Concrete to pictorial to abstract, using everyday manipulatives like linking cubes and base ten blocks, then bar models and number bonds on the page. |
| Word problems | Present in each lesson but more predictable in the elementary levels; honors pages add harder applications. | Multi-step word problems solved with bar models are central and get demanding quickly. |
| Parent role | Medium: parent watches the video and presents with blocks in early levels; older students can learn from the video and manual more on their own. | High in early grades: lesson presentation lives in the Home Instructor's Guide; grades 4-5 students do more independent work. |
| Pace against school grades | Skills-based and deliberately not tied to grades; often runs behind the public school sequence in topics like geometry and measurement. | Publisher describes it as more advanced than typical US standards, often covering topics earlier. |

Switching between Math-U-See and Singapore Math (Dimensions Math)
From Math-U-See to Singapore Math (Dimensions Math)
Take the Singapore Math placement test, which checks whether a half level is already mastered. Children coming from Math-U-See often place below their grade because the topic order is so different; gaps tend to appear in geometry, measurement, money, time and multi-step word problems. Some families add word problem practice first instead of dropping back.
From Singapore Math (Dimensions Math) to Math-U-See
Use the Math-U-See online placement tool, and call its free placement specialists if the result is unclear. Because each level centers on one operation, a child can place by their weakest operation and spend time on topics they partly know; parents often skim the familiar lessons and move faster.

See where they stand →Questions parents ask
Is Singapore Math harder than Math-U-See?
Singapore Math usually moves faster and asks for more multi-step problem solving at each grade. Math-U-See goes deeper on one operation at a time, which many struggling children find easier, but it is not tied to grade levels.
Is Math-U-See behind grade level?
The publisher places by mastery, not grade, so a school fourth or fifth grader can place in Gamma or Delta. Compared with grade-level tests, topics like geometry and measurement often come later than in Singapore Math or public school.
Can you use Math-U-See and Singapore Math together?
Some families do, using Singapore Math to introduce concepts or for word problems and Math-U-See blocks to make them concrete. Placing a child in each program separately with its own placement test avoids mismatched levels.
Which level should my child start in?
Use the publisher's placement guidance for the program you choose; levels rarely line up one to one between programs. If you are not sure where your child stands, an independent adaptive test such as Point of Progress (grades 3 to 10, about forty minutes at home) shows their level and the skills that need work.
