Placement guide, language arts

Which level of Learning Language Arts Through Literature should my child start?

How Learning Language Arts Through Literature levels line up with school grades, how its placement test works, what to do if your child lands between two levels, and the mistakes parents most often make.

The short answer. Each color is a fixed grade, but the colors do not run in rainbow order: Blue 1, Red 2, Yellow 3, Orange 4, Purple 5, Tan 6, Green 7, Gray 8. Gold is not one book but four high school courses, and there is only one Gold assessment for all of them.

Use the publisher's own placement tool to choose the level (free, PDF). If you are not sure where your child really is, or the result surprises you, check the level first: it is quicker than a wrong book.

How Learning Language Arts Through Literature placement works

  • There is one printable skills assessment per color, with a teacher section and a student section, and it can be spread over several days.
  • Start with the test for the child's current grade or the grade just finished.
  • From Orange up, the child first reads a passage from the book's first book study and answers comprehension questions, then does a skills section.
  • Ready means reading the passage with little difficulty, answering most questions, and getting 8 of the 12 skills right (8 of 10 for Gray and Gold).
  • The Yellow test instead has the child read three rows of words aloud: 10 or fewer misread words means start Yellow and review those sounds, 11 or more means Yellow with full phonics review or the Red Book.

If your child lands between two levels

If the child gets everything right, try the next color's test. Seven or fewer skills right means review those skills before starting, or try the previous color's test. The publisher says a few problem areas do not mean dropping a grade, since all skills are repeated, and recommends staying at grade level unless there are extraordinary circumstances. Check the scope and sequence and sample lessons before moving up or down.

Problems parents often run into

  • Parents report the upper levels are too easy or not challenging enough for their grade.
  • Parents report composition is light, and some add a separate writing program.
  • The novels for most levels must be bought or borrowed separately, and parents report some titles are hard to find or that they feel locked into the publisher's choices.
  • Several parents report editing mistakes and typos in the books.
  • Handwriting is not included from the Orange Book up, and weekly dictation and spelling tests still need a parent.

Switching to Learning Language Arts Through Literature from another program

  • A child who finished the previous color is ready for the next one without testing. The assessments are mainly for children coming from another program.
  • Use the test for the current or just-completed grade first, then move one color up or down.
  • Any book study in the program can be swapped for another book study the family prefers.

When you don't need a whole level

A placement test answers one question: which book. If your child is mostly on track but shaky in one area, say fractions or paragraph writing, a full lower level means months of review they do not need. Practising just the gaps is faster, and keeps them in the book that fits the rest of their skills.

Questions parents ask

How long is a Learning Language Arts Through Literature lesson?

20-30 minutes or less for most lessons

Is it bad if my child places below their grade?

No. Programs pace topics differently, so a lower level often reflects the order things were taught, not how able a child is. What matters is starting where the work makes sense.

Do I need a placement test at all?

If you are switching programs or your child has had a hard year, yes. Starting too high is the most common reason a new curriculum stalls in the first month.
